How to fly fish

Hello friends,

To learn how to fly fish  and start your ‘career’ as fly fisherman the first thing which you have to do is to visit the fly shop. You will need some artificial flies from there and of course a fly rod :)

Fly fishing is very different than other types of fishing because here you have to catch the fish very close to the surface of the water. This makes our task a bit more difficult but also and exciting. Artificial flies are made using thread, beads, feathers, wire and of course yarn and some hair. The idea here is to make them look as much as it is possible to living insects. Baitfish can be also used since depending on their maturity they can attract salmon, trout, panfish and carp.
Most of the fisherman’s prefer sporty fly fishing somewhere in the mountain streams, but you can also enjoy it in the warm waters and lakes. The great news here ( if you are beginner of course ) is that you can even fly fishing in salt water.

I will try to update my fly fishing blogs often, because the topic is very interesting for me and I’m sure for some of you too.
P.S. You can make a small YouTube fly fishing research to get a bit more familiar with this type of fishing.

Fishing Jigs

fishing jigsThey are many custom fishing jigs most of them have weighted metal heads. They are mady from animal hair, rubber and very soft plastic. You can also try to create homemade fishing jigs, to do so, get the needed materials, buy one from the shop and experiment ! Some anglers use pork or minnows on jig hook. You can catch almost every freshwater fish species and even some of the saltwater fish.

Plugs

fishing plugsFor top of the water or specified depths bellow the surface plugs are great to be used. They have wood or plastic body. Floating plugs or so called top water plugs are designed to float on the surface. If you want to fish on certain depth diving plugs are a great choice, they have plastic or metal lips. Depending on this lips the depth is set. The diving plugs are also called crankbaits because of their use with bait casting reels that operate like a crank.

Look at the ‘head’ of this plug, below the ring. This is the metal lip which we mentioned above. The depth on which the plug will operate is set by the angle of the lip.
If the lip creates acute angle with the plug body the depth will be bigger. If the lip is making obtuse angle with the body of the plug, the depth on which the plug is operating will be reduced. So depending on the depth of the place where you fish, choose the right angle to adjust the correct depth.

Spoons

spoon fishingYou can replace minnows by using spoons, they are designed well to mimic the natural movement of minnows.

Spoons are very popular and used by many people because they are extremely easy to use. Of course you must know which is the right spoon to use depending on the place and how you’re fishing – (casting, jigging or trolling).
Each spoon model has a different color and action depending on the type of water and the species you’re fishing. If you are not well familiar with spoons, do not be shy and ask your tackle shop which one to use depending on the place where you will go to fish.
Most of the sellers know well all water pools or rivers around their shops and they can be a source of valuable information.

Insects

One of the best methods for catching sunfish, trout and pan fish is to use insects. They are many insects which are usable for this purpose here are few which you can use :

Beetles, ants, crickets, caterpillars and grasshoppers.
If you want to catch brown trout, you must know that trouts are very attracted to ants presented on a fly. If you are out fishing for a large trout you should use caddis, stonefly or mayflies and remember that you must have immature versions of this insects.

Tips and tricks for insects

Finding a bait like insects is easy you can buy them from local shops or you can catch them by your own, seek for ant nests and spread some bread crumbs around them. Ants are very active and communicative insects so in few minutes hundreds  of them will be ready to be cached. For bigger baits like grasshoppers you can use small nets.

Minnows

minnowBasically minnows definition is baby fish. Freshwater minnows are great all-around fishing bait. They are available at bait shops,     but if you do not want to buy them you can of course catch them by your own if it’s legal in your area.

Minnows come in different sizes so for bass and pike fishing it is better to use larger ‘shiners’.

Advice : for retrieve and cast, drifting and trolling the proper hooking should be done through the minnows both lips or through   their tail.

Otherwise if you are willing to fish still with a bobber, the best way is to hook the minnow directly through the back. (right above the dorsal fin.)
While you are hooking the minnows try to keep their spinal cord safe, do not damage it. The idea here is that the minnow must be able to move on its own. This will increase your chances, because natural movements with such bait are attracting predators more than anything else.

Once again to learn how to fish with minnows successfully :
- Do not damage their spinal cord ( For still fishing ) .
- hook the minnow vertically through both lips or through the tail. (For cast and retrieve, trolling and drifting).

Using Leeches

Fishing with leeches

Among all the freshwater bites one of the best are leeches. Another advantage is that they are available in all bait shops.

The correct way of hooking leeches is through the sucker in the tail. Keep in mind that in both of their ends leeches have suckers, but the tail sucker is always larger than the head disk. You must follow a simple rule when you are fishing with leeches, do not fish them faster than their natural swim speed. You can experiment in a jar full with water to see  how the leeches act in water. It is good to make such experiments to understand the basics of the fishing. The natural swimming of the leeches is attracting fish.

Few tips and tricks for Leeches

Use a small silicone net with very tight holes just the water to be able to pass through them. Put the leeches inside and leave the net (bag) in the water.
This will allow the Leeches to adjust to the temperature, so they will stretch well and begin to swim naturally.  This is one excellent tip to prepare your bait.
One more thing, if some of your leeches left after the fishing day, the good news is that you can keep them fresh in a refrigerator for many days.

Cut Fishing Bait

When using such bait, fish are attracted in a whole new way to your bait rather than the usual bait or lures. Cut fishing bait is perfect for fish species which are  more attracted to scent. Any caught small or big fish is usable to be sliced on pieces to make a cut bait. Our personal experience shows that it is better to remove the scales form the piece, but leave the skin !

Catfish is very likely to hit on such bait.

Species of the saltwater like sea trout, bluefish and sailfish prefer the cut fishing bait.
